The Own the Wave 2-piece SUP paddle is heavier than most paddles, weighing in at two pounds, which is almost twice the weight as other models on my best-of paddle list. However, the alloy shaft and soft nylon blade are incredibly durable and designed to handle plenty of wear and tear out on the water. This model comes with a Twin-Pin adjustment system that’s very easy to use, intuitive, and versatile. While this paddle can’t compete with lighter models, in terms of performance, it’s one of the most affordable and durable paddles on the market. The fact that it comes with one of the top locking mechanism systems is another reason why this model is flying off the shelves.
Our Verdict: This is one heavy paddle, but it’s also very durable and affordable. If you need a touring paddle, then you won’t want to sacrifice your paddling performance. This model isn’t the best choice for touring purposes, but it’s easy to use and does move cleanly through the water. However, it’s not designed for the serious paddler in need of a paddle they can use for racing purposes or long-distance touring. While this model is easy to pull through the water, the heavier weight will definitely slow you down and can easily tire you out. Overall, in terms of durability and a beginner-friendly design, this model earned a high rating.
Overview and Features
This may not be the best SUP paddle or the flashiest, but it still manages to stand out from the competition for a few different reasons. Its heavy design is one of them, but the fact that it offers a higher than average adjustability range makes this model a great choice for a wide range of applications. It’s also very affordable, so if you’re new to paddle boarding and you want to upgrade the model that came with your SUP, then this paddle is a great option. The plain design and heavier weight are the two biggest drawbacks, but if you’re tired of high priced paddles that are difficult to adjust and too delicate for use in choppier water conditions, then this aluminum nylon paddle is a better fit and a model that’s designed to last.
The fact that this model offers a better than average adjustment range will make it a great choice for buyers with more than one SUP user in the family. Weighing in at two pounds, this paddle can’t compete with lightweight carbon fiber paddles, but it can definitely get the job done. It features a large teardrop-shaped blade, which allows users to easily manipulate their course and focus on paddling straight. But it’s weight can make it hard to make tighter turns or enact quick movements.
This model is pretty plain, in terms of looks. The generic silver and black design can’t compete with the modern carbon fiber paddles that are available for nearly twice the price.
Pulling this paddle through the water tends to quickly tire the user out. However, there are models that are available at a comparable price, such as the Abahub 3-Piece Adjustable Alloy paddle, that can offer a smoother stroke performance, despite the fact that it’s slightly heavier than this Own the Wave model.
You can learn more about the paddle’s efficient transfer of power and the cleaner stroke potential in my Abahub adjustable SUP paddle review.
The two-pound weight will be a big concern for any paddler who races or participates in long-distance touring. If you’re not heavily focused on speed or performance, then the weight won’t matter. If you’re looking for a lighter paddle, one that can take you the distance, then I recommend checking out carbon fiber paddles, such as the Super Paddles Elite 12k Bamboo Carbon Fiber SUP Paddle, which comes in at half the weight.
The two-piece design and Twin Pin locking mechanism make this model intuitive and easy to adjust. Beginners will not have any issues learning how to use the locking mechanism, especially since the shaft features numbers that mark each of the adjustment holes, so when you switch paddles with other members in the family, just remember which height worked the best for you, so you can quickly adjust the paddle to the perfect length. The eighteen-inch adjustment range is one of the best in my product lineup.
The Twin Pin locking mechanism is much easier to use than what you’ll find on top-selling models. The adjustment options are very straightforward and intuitive. You won’t have to use a screwdriver to adjust the clamping pressure, which is another plus. The locking mechanism works by pressing on the collar clamp, which will release a stainless steel pin from the adjustment hole, so you can shorten or lengthen the shaft. Once you’ve reached the right length, all you have to do is press the clamp back down toward the shaft and the pin will make its way into the closest hole.
Advantages and Disadvantages
- Excellent locking mechanism
- Better than average adjustment range
- Two-piece design
- Floats in water
- Plain design
- Handle can be uncomfortable
Conclusion and Rating
The Own the Wave two-piece SUP paddle is affordable, durable, and comes with a better than average length adjustment range that allows more than one SUP user in the home to get plenty of use out of this paddle. The heavy design makes it a poor choice for touring or racing, but the casual SUP user will appreciate the lower price and durable design. If you’re looking for a model that allows you to enjoy your time out on the water, and you don’t mind the extra weight, then this paddle can easily meet your needs. I gave this model a rating of four and a half out of five stars.
